There are a variety of woodworking books that can help you learn how to become more adept at woodworking. The best general how to woodworking books are going to guide you through different projects with detailed step by step instructions. If you’re a novice woodworker then these would be great companions in order to refer to when you first take on your projects at home. Most people start off with books from their fathers or grandfathers and this is often the best starting point for learning how to woodwork. After all if your father or grandfather was a carpenter then they most likely had some great plans that they used to construct their own projects.
The first woodworking books I would look out for would be either by William Houghton or Bill Hylton. William Houghton is a professional carpenter that has a number of publications that focus primarily on woodworking as well as carpentry. If you want to know more about using wooden pieces of furniture and also carpentry then this would be a good place to start your studies.
Bill Hylton is another professional woodworking book author that has a lot of great books that focus on beginners. A beginner woodworkers set of plans and a complete manual on basic carpentry projects should be on the top of your list. You may even choose to purchase his books as a bundle so you can get a complete manual as well as plans for beginner woodworking projects. It is always best to make sure that you have both sources because a beginner woodworker will not have all the needed information yet.
If you’re a beginner to the woodworking world then my recommendation would be either pick up a copy of the “CAD Survival Handbook” by Peter Korn or read “The Woodworkers Dictionary: A Complete Introduction to Woodworking” by Keith Coleman. These two woodworking books are great for learning the basics of carpentry and woodworking in general. I would start with either one of these books and work your way through the other books available. In most cases a beginner need to read only the first couple books so they can get the hang of reading and comprehending woodworking terminology. Once you feel confident enough you can start reading other books in the woodworking world.
If you have already read one or two woodworking books it is time to move onto a true beginners guide. There are a ton of amazing projects available for beginner woodworkers such as cabinets, bird houses, table legs, etc… If you are looking for a new hobby or a great project to build you should check out some of the power tools that are available for use by beginners. Here are a few of my favorites “The Power Tools Manual For Absolute Beginners” by Joseph R. Graziano and “The Complete Cabinet Builder’s Handbook” by Richard Groschich “How To Make Your Own Cabinet,” by Frank Kern, and “Cabinet Guide – The Ultimate Guide For Absolute Beginners” by Michael J. Gerber.
The best woodworking books for beginners are usually geared towards the carpentry craft itself. They usually include projects for tables, chairs, bird houses, chairs with plans and instructions on how to make them. Many people don’t realize how much detail is included in books on carpentry, but it is actually quite a bit of information, and something you wouldn’t want to miss out on.
Another great place to look for a beginner’s woodworking reference book is online. There are many places on the internet where you can purchase eBooks, and even find websites that offer entire crafts courses on woodworking. These are especially good for people who want to learn the craft but aren’t quite ready to join a local woodworkers club or shop. Most of these sites will give you a list of available projects, along with descriptions of each project, and will include complete instructions as well. If you’re a visual learner, you’ll probably be happy with online woodworking courses. However, if you’re more of a text book kind of learner, you may want to stick to a book or hardback reference book.
One of my favorite resources for learning more about woodworking is instagram. The picture-sharing social network allows woodworkers from all over the world to show off their skills in a fun way. Many woodworkers make their profiles private so that other woodworkers can see what they have been working on, and to learn from them. They sometimes post images of their cutting boards or handcrafted items, and some even put up videos of themselves at work!
