How to Use a Speed Square As a Saw Guide

In nearly a century, Speed Square has been a renowned standard measuring instrument patented and trademarked by the Swanson Company, that still produces the same instrument from its original Frankfort, Illinois production base. In many ways it may be easier to learn how to use a speed square than it is to use the scales of measurement, since the squares are easy to measure and place on a surface. The original square was simply a piece of cardboard covered with felt paper, which was tied along at the corners for a more secure holding. It consisted of a series of four numbers separated by dots. Today’s squares are printed on high-quality, heavy-duty plastic, and they come in a variety of colors. It is very easy to measure the length of any surface, and you may choose to mark the corners of the square with a different color for each dimension, to make it easier to find in the dark.

Learning how to use a speed square is similar to learning how to use a tape measure or a protractor. Start with one end of the line, then read the number off the side. Use a ruler to get the exact reading, as this will give you a better idea of the area you are measuring. To change the reading of the square, simply move it in another direction until the reading is on the opposite side of the ruler. When you measure the area of a circle, you have two measurements, a horizontal and a vertical.

There are three basic measurements, called the sidereal, cross-sectional, and angular sections. Using these measurements, you can find out how to use a speed square on almost any surface. For example, on a pinterest board, you need to know the two-by-fours. These two-by-fours represent the corners of the interest, and when you learn how to use a speed square, you will know that you are looking at two-by-fours on the board.

Another surface to use a square on is a woodworking table. When you are learning how to use a speed square on a woodworking table, it is the same as measuring a regular table. You just have to remember that the horizontal line that represents the corner of the square goes two feet from the edge of the table to the center of the tabletop. Also, you must make sure that the distance between the two-by-fours is exactly two feet from each other. This means that if the board is a different size than the tabletop, you should make sure that you use a square that is the same size for the larger piece.

One last way to use a speed square is to find the right roof pitch for your roof. The two-by-fours are used in order to mark the corners of the roof; however, you need to understand that roof pitch angles are much different than standard roof angles. For one thing, the angle on a roof pitch is measured from left to right, not right to left. Also, you must be aware of how steep of a pitch you need to use because the angle only measures how high to provide for a straight line from left to right. Rafter squares can help you with these two issues.

Fence patterns can often be tricky. If you plan on doing your own fence, using a speed square as a saw guide may prove useful because you will be able to quickly see if you are cutting on the correct lines or if you are off by just a very little bit. Because the squares are so small, you can quickly see which areas of the fence need to be sawed off so that you do not cause any damage to your saw.

Using a speed square as a measuring angle and a pinterest board may seem like an odd combination, but it actually works quite well. You simply take your measuring angle and make a horizontal line with your pinterest on the horizontal line. Then, you use the interest angle as your main yardstick for measuring angles on the angled line.

The last of the ways how to use a speed square as a saw guide involves finding the diamond-shaped hole in your roof. The diamond-shaped hole is located where your house and its attached roof meet. This is not always easy to find, especially if you live in an area that gets extreme temperatures during the summertime. To find this spot without getting in your car and moving around, you can mark the spot with chalk. You should be able to see at least three points on your chalkboard that are parallel to each other and then you will have the diamond-shaped hole.
